Ki Māha. One Of Waiheke’s Hospitality Crown Jewels.
Anyone who knows Waiheke will know Ki Māha. Anyone who knows Ki Māha will know that it is a stunningly designed and presented hospitality venue right on the beach at Onetangi. This is the epitome of aspirational and lifestyle living!
The current owner acquired the business that was formally on this Fourth Avenue site and set about creating his masterpiece. Absolutely no expense was spared in the planning, design, and execution of the David Ponting designed renovation and the incredible fit-out. Indeed, around $4m was spent on the whole project!
Ki Maha opened in August 2020 to critical acclaim offering the b est of Kiwi fare and Ki Māha New Zealand wine in elegant surrounds and in an elegant style.
THE RESTAURANT
The restaurant itself has a soaring pitched roof and beautifully crafted furniture and design details. The whole restaurant is positioned to look out over the wide sun-drenched north facing deck out over beautiful Onetangi Beach and into the gorgeous blue sea beyond. It is just the most spectacular place from which to watch the world go by with a glass of locally produced wine.
There is a gorgeous commercial kitchen that any chef would be proud to work in.
THE BEACH STORE
There is a busy shop off to one side of the building (around the corner from the main front deck). This is an upmarket little seaside store that stocks ice cream, drinks and serves coffee along with all sorts of things that someone might need for a day’s relaxing on the beach. The store can do $30k in sales a week during busy times!
THE KI MĀHA WINE BRAND
The Ki Māha wine brand allows the business to tap into the tourist market that wants to explore wines on Waiheke Island, without the outlay and costs of owning a vineyard. The wine is sourced from and made by incredibly reputable names in the wine industry and the label design has won gold at the Pride in Print awards. (Source pride print awards).
THE BUSINESS
The business has really started to hit its stride having weathered the covid storm. This is the first true summer the business has enjoyed with tourists back. Sales have grown steadily through the year and, despite restricted opening days / hours, the business will achieve sales of over $3m for the financial year. Sales just for December were an impressive $500,000 inc GST!
There is a solid team of staff in place. There are two Restaurant Managers who looks after all things front of House and a Head Chef looks after everything to do with the kitchen. They, in turn, have senior staff that report to them.
The owner has set the business up to run under management. He has certainly been present in and around the business ensuring that staff are happy, and that quality standard are maintained but the business runs with little supervision.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The opportunity to own Ki Māha is certainly tantalising. The business continues to grow and there is very real growth potential here. An astute new owner will realise this potential over the coming seasons. If the owner were keeping the business he would open longer hours now that we are out of covid issues and staff issues, and he would host more lucrative functions such as wedding on the island.
